The kind of binding seen on cookbooks and manuals is known as comb binding, it is a more traditional and economical method. It requires PVC plastic comb spines. The plastic comb is placed in a comb opener so as to spread the round rings apart, which is then enclosed around a stack of paper, which binds the book. These books can easily be reopened to add or remove pages. The standard 8.5” x 1” sheets use 19-ring combs.
Some pages are bound together by continuous plastic coil spun through a series of closely spaced holes along the binding edge- this method is known as coil binding. This allows a certain flexibility as the pages can turn 360 degrees, so that the book can lay flat while reading or working on it. These days an electric spiral binding coil inserter is used. It is an ideal tool for a quick turnaround. Excess coil can simply be crimped off by pressing a foot pedal on this machine.
Calendars and notebooks typically use the kind of binding called the wire binding. In this type a continuous hinge of paired loops is used to bind books together. Excess wire binding is crimped off by a wire pincher. This Kind of binding, like coil, allows one to open the documents wide open while also offering a classy look to the document.
A thermal binding process that we see on wrap-around book covers is called Unibind. When the spine is placed on the heating element, the adhesive is activated by heat. Loose pages are placed into the thermal binding cover- it could be either a hard cover or a soft cover- which then is placed into the binding machine. The heating element is activated by the weight of the document. It is operated on a preset time. When this process is completed, the document is placed on a cooling rack.
The purpose for binding the document will determine which kind of method to use. Coil, wire and Unibind are great for marketing as they provide flexibility to conform to brand marketing. A coil system is better for binding something like a training manual as it is rugged and flexible for readers. Comb systems are better is one needs to switch, remove or add pages.
Apart from use, the right kind of document binding can also make your organization look more professional. Even f not used for marketing, it represent a particular brand in a positive way. One just has to figure out what works best for them.
